www.sailrite.com Part 7 – Home Sewing – Easily switch from heavy canvas sewing to light home sewing! Simply replace the needle to a smaller size, back off the tension, and use a smaller thread size. The Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ-1 sewing machine is a straight stitch/zigzag sewing machine (Patent #6499415) featuring a mechanical walking presser foot that moves forward and back in time with the feed dog to ensure that the layers of fabric are consistently moving together through the machine. The result—heavy, bulky and even sticky fabrics like leather and window material are easily sewn with consistently symmetrical stitch lengths.
Yahoo Answers For Home Sewing Machine
Question Can a home sewing machine work as efficiently as a industrial machine?
I’m a student and i work primarily on a tabletop juki machine. They are very fast and i can get allot done in very little time. But I’m going to be moving soon and i will need a machine that can complete all different types of garments at a relatively fast pace. Can I complete the same in of work at the same pace with a home sewing machine? Thanks for the help.

Best Answer Yes, and no. There are a few models of home machines that are designed for pros and do work at a faster speed than others. Janome produces a professional model, the MC6600P machine that sews 1200 stitches a minute straight stitch. The el-cheapo machine at wal mart or Target…not so fast. Or as reliable. if you are used to the speed and the stitch quality offered by a fast machine then the majority of the home machines will be far too slow and you’ll be waiting for the machine to catch up to you. Since you do so much sewing the professional model is a much better investment. It looks like a home machine on the outside, but inside it has the speed and stitch quality that a professional advanced sewer needs. It will complete a wide variety of garments quickly and efficiently. It has lots of utility stitches and a good variety of decorative stitches too. It doesn’t do pre-programmed hooped embroidery -which is a good thing! You can do free motion embroidery easily. It is a table top home machine with the motor and head in one unit. If you wish to buy an industrial machine that does a variety of stitches then the Bernina 950 is a good machine. It is a true industrial meaning the table, motor and head are separate. It offers 14 stitches and a semi automatic buttonhole. Here are the two machines: http://www.berninausa.com/product_detail-n2-i223-sUS.html and in it’s price for purchase with table, motor, and head: http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp00796-0070.html The Janome worthy of your talents: http://www.janome.com/index.cfm/Machines/Sewing-Quilting/MC6600P I have several industrials and I find many home machines far too slow. I run home machines at a “pedal to the metal” speed and I find the Janome is the closest to industrial speed. Most domestic home machines, even the expensive brands, don’t have the same level of speed that a pro is accustomed to. Hope that helped a bit.
Question How to judge the quality and/or versatility of a home sewing machine?
The sewing machine presently in use has problems with the tension knobs. It is more than fifteen years old. Have the features on newer machines changed drastically and is it practical to invest in a newer moderate priced machine — 200 range – versus having this older one repaired. The sewing machine will be used for quilting and home sewing projects. I’m not into fancy embroidering stitches but zig-zag is useful. Can anyone recommend the merits of different brands.

Best Answer Take you machine in for a good cleaning and servicing. It’s possible the tensions knobs have slipped or the mechanism is gummed up with lint or other gunk or the springs have unsprung. If you are comfortable and happy with your current machine then a repair is a far better investment than buying a new machine. There’s been a lot of consolidation in home sewing machines, a few companies own many different brands now. Some new machines, especially the lower priced ones -are simply not worth the money. If you do end up needing a new machine, then take your time when buying a new one. Try to buy through a dealer, they will be able to give you lessons for operating your new machine, they will have needles, accessories, whatever you need to keep your new machine happy and healthy. Take sample of the type of sewing that you do so the dealer can help you select the best machine for your needs. I agree about not needing fancy embroidery stitches, what good is three thousand duckies and bunnies if it can’t do straight and zig zag? Test drive as many machines as possible to get the one that’s best for you. Don’t buy only based on price, try to buy the best machine for your purposes. I like Janomes the best. They are good quality versatile machines and have many different models for many different purposes. They can take generic low shank presser feet, so you can buy all those fancy specialty feet that make sewing so much easier. I also like SInger, I have a couple industrial singers and they would happily work 24-7 without complaint. Bernina is a durable and hard working brand, but quite expensive, as are Pfaffs. Pfaff has the very best top of the line machine with every bell and whistle ever imagined; for those times you have an extra 10,000 dollars floating around for buying a sewing machine. (yeah, sure, i can afford that…NOT!) Their lower priced machines are okay, but in my opinion overpriced for what you get. And that’s all I can think of for now!

Question How much money to repair sewing machine? timing might be up on my sewing machine, and if that is the true problem, i will have to take it to get repaired. Anyone know an estimate on how much it would cost to readjust timing on my sewing machine? I called a sewing machine repair place and told them my needle was running into the bobbin case, so they said i might need the timing readjusted.
Best Answer Typically a COA (clean/oil/adjust) aka tuneup around here is 50-90, usually a bit more if the machine is electronic. Why do you think the machine is out of time and not just a bad needle or misthreaded or in need of cleaning? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090925205957AAq0xc4

Question Is there an online guide to sewing machine repair and problems? We have 2 Singer sewing machines that have bobbin problems and are quirky at times. I would like to diagnose the problems and fix them at home. Anyone have any ideas or links that might help? Thanks!
Best Answer My first suggestion is a good, thorough cleaning and oiling. Use a vacuum, not canned air, to get dust out, and pull the needleplate to get good access to the bobbin area. Oil per the manual’s recommendations using genuine sewing machine oil, not 3-in-1 type household oils nor WD-40 (it’s a solvent, not a lubricant.) If these machines are modern (last 10-20 years)non-mechanicals, and they have not had a COA (clean-oil-adjust), they’re probably more than overdue. If they’re mechanical machines, you can learn a lot about doing a basic COA by joining the yahoo group “wefixit”. Electronic and computerized machines probably need to go to the sewing machine mechanic for a COA. At any rate, first try the cleaning and oiling regimen found in the owners manual, and then put in a new needle and rethread with manual in hand. Make sure you’re using the right bobbin — visually, there’s not much difference between a class 15 and a class 66 bobbin, but the machine will pitch a fit with the wrong bobbin. Many user problems are directly traceable to misthreading, poor quality thread and worn or damaged needles. Give yourself a break when troubleshooting and start with good quality replaceables and the full instructions. Fault tracing: http://sewandserge.com/tshoot.asp http://sewing.about.com/od/sewingmachineindex/a/mtroubleshot.htm http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/Sewing%20Machine%20Troubleshooting.htm http://cahe.nmsu.edu/pubs/_c/c-202.html http://www.singerco.com Most of the problems I talk people through are traceable to misthreading (especially threading with the presser foot down), bad needle, crummy thread and bobbin in backwards. Next most common problem is filthy machine that also needs oiling. Timing is almost never an issue unless you’ve broken a needle or had loud noises just before the machine quit. Suggested reading, probably available at your library: John Giordano’s Sewing Machine Book and Gale Grigg Hazen’s Owners Guide to Sewing Machines, Sergers and Knitting Machines. Hazen’s section on bad sewing habits is excellent, btw.

Question

on-line sewing machine repair? my machine’s foot pedal isn’t triggering a response. if i wiggle my foot it will eventually make a connection but it starts and stops suddenly. sewing is next to impossible and i’m having withdrawal symptoms. can someone point me to an on-line DIY repair site so i DON’T have to take it in to a shop where they will charge more for repairs than the machine is worth?
Best Answer I have similar problems every few years with one of my old kenmore machines. Rather than trying to fix it, I’ve gone to partscentral.com and ordered a replacement for about 25 bucks. Mine seems to be not with the switch in the machine, as others have suggested, but with the cord, as I could get it to work if I kinked the cord just so, but it is such as hassle. No reasoning as to why it happens – my cat isn’t chewing on the cord or anything.

Question What’s wrong with my sewing machine and how much would it cost to repair it? While I was sewing, I heard a loud pop and then the machine sounded like it was running low on power. I turned it off and realized the needle was bent. So, I replaced the needle. But when I pushed the foot pedal the needle did not move, but I could hear the motor running. When I turn the nob on the side, the needle moves. Do you think it’s a belt, or something, that broke? If you think you may know the problem, how much would it cost to fix it?
Best Answer Impossible to say from the information given. Broken needles are generally the result of trying to push or pull the fabric under the presser foot instead of letting the machine transport the fabric. Or trying to sew through fabric too dense for the machine, or with too light a needle. Start by taking out your manual, turning to the section on cleaning the machine, and start by taking all the thread out of/off of the machine. Remove the bobbin, bobbin case, needle plate and any and all lint, bits of thread and needle shards you see. Use a vacuum, not compressed air, and brush to get the machine clean. Oil only as directed by the manual, and use only sewing machine oil, not 3-in-1 types nor WD-40 types, both of which will freeze up a machine (for different reasons!). Reassemble correctly. Once you’re done cleaning, rethread the machine from scratch and try again. Does the needlebar move? Does it stitch? (If it doesn’t, is the needle in the right way around?) Do the feed dogs move properly? Does it sound right? Is the machine in time? (see http://preview.tinyurl.com/smtiming) What you’ve done (new needle, clean machine, rethreading correctly) may fix the problem. I’ve become the neighborhood “last stop before taking the machine in for professional service” person, and in my experience, about 90% of the dead machines I’m asked to look at are magically fixed by cleaning and rethreading and new needle. My guesses as to what might be going on that you can’t fix with the above treatment include timing, a broken gear or cam, a broken belt (though most machines now lack one), an electrical fault, a broken sewing hook, a popped fuse or circuit breaker…. could be a lot of things, and the cost to fix may range from nearly free to “not worth fixing this machine”.

Question

Vintage Sewing Machine Repair? okay, so after a few hours of messing with the darn thing and searching around on the internet i am at a loss and figured i would come to my trusty yahoo!Answers brethren 😛 I bought a Sears Kenmore 158.18032 Sewing Machine, a model from 1973 i believe, its motor runs fine and the lower belt spins fine, but the hand wheel and the belt connecting the hand wheel are giving me a laundry list of problems, the belt wont catch when the motor runs, i can hand crank to needle but it is difficult and takes forever, i need to get at the belt to see if it needs replacing or if the gear just needs a bit of oil. Unfortunately, a 1973 model rarely comes with a manual and this one didnt, i was wondering if anyone might have this or a similar model and if so, might know how to remove the cover, if possible, or how to get at this problem thanks in advance!!!
Best Answer I’d send you to talk to the nice folks at the yahoo group “wefixit”, where good information about diagnosis and treatment of old sewing machine problems is dispensed. Also, I’m going to send you to the Sears Parts Direct website, where you will find a manual and parts diagram for this machine. I believe Linda at Relics has a service manual for the 158 machines, also, for sale. Could be a bad belt, could be fossilized oil (especially if someone has oiled it with 3-in-1 type oils), could be a lot of things.

After reading all the reviews on the Janome 660,I ordered it. In the meantime I found the 661 and it had more features that I liked. I ordered the Jem Gold Plus and sent the 660 back without opening it. I haven’t tried the serger yet but it sews like a dream, doesn’t vibrate and is quiet. It has a beautiful, even straight stitch (no puckering), and the zig zags are all every even.ReplyMaryellen Walsh “Kansas charmer”says:Great little machine Ive never owned a machine manufactured before 1970 so this machine may seem so great bc of its lightness and ease of use but I was looking for something that could be stowed easily and had an easy bobbin to use (could no longer lift my old one to access the bobbin). I didn’t care about having a whole lot of stitch options but these are a good selection. And I absolutely love the server. Customer support from the vendor (ken’s) was awesome.Replykaren colleensays:Who Would Buy a Sewing Machine On-line? COLLECTIONMachinesDescriptionThe Singer 48k. A
rare beast, 19th century, but looking quite modern. I love the
superb goldwork on it. I had it displayed at our local Marks
& Spencer’s until I realised how rare it was.Ah, my favourite
Agenoria. Bought from Maggie Snell some years ago, it is
nearly perfect. It simply shines. It has more gold on it that
Tutan-what’s his name in Egypt.A beautiful Ward Arm
& Platform.Ward made, if not the first, certainly one
of the first free arm machines in the World. Considered the
finest machine of the Victorian era. Ward was killed by a
horse while out taking the air, silly boy.An assortment of
Challenge’s, Shakespeare’s a Collier and Monarch. They all
came from similar manufactures around Middle England.Where the start of the industrial revolution
took place (the reason Britain ruled a quarter of the planet,
before everyone caught up and overtook us).Two Pfaff boxes, one
showing the impressive factory at Kaiserslautern, the other
showing two of the factory staff hard at work.A superb early Grover
& Baker with a 1848 patent disc. I travelled across
Britain to snatch this beauty from the clutches of another
keen collector. It was part of an old museum that closed.
He-he-he-he, ouch!!!, now I have pulled something in my chest,
I am going to have to lay down now. This is an interesting
item. It was used in factories for timing products. A sewing
girl would press the lever down, sew the product and stop the
item. Three girls would sew the same item and an average time
used to price the work. Of course the girls all knew how to
look as if they were sewing fast, but were in fact taking
their time.The Jones factory at
Audenshaw, Manchester, knocked out machines for over a
century. Probably the best known make in England besides
Singer. This beauty circa 1910 looks as if it was made
yestersday. A mass of Moldacots.
To my knowledge, I have the largest collection of them in the
World. I have spent 3 decades searching them out. Now they
have risen above my spending limits. I can still be found
stroking them on dark nights. I do take the pills, but they
don’t always help.A super rare Starley
Queen of Hearts. It is in superb condition with the transfers
in the middle nearly 100%. I love this one (because it
is so valuable). Money makes the world go around, the world go
around———-My true favorite
machine, snapped up from the jaws of death. It was riddled
with woodworm and was about to be thrown out. It was the
machine used to repair costumes behind the set of the World
Famous Glyndeborne Opera- House for half a century. The No8 Wheeler &
Wilson. This has unusual gold work. It transforms a normally
basic machine into something much nicer. I picked this one up
from one of the oldest families in Eastbourne. They run the
Allchorn boats that make day trips around the Lighthouse at
Beachy Head, from the Pier.A Bartlett hexagonal,
pretty, and now rare. I did a deal with Graham Forsdyke for
this baby 10 years ago. Notice my two vicious guards, anyone
comes close they are in trouble. They are both black belts in
`Trollodo`. The seldom herd of but deadly art of leaping up to
your face and jamming their red hats up your nostrils
until you plead for mercy.A White’s Peerless. I
love the different Vignette’s that appear in the centre of
these machines. This one is of a deer in a woodland. There was
a large importers in Brighton near us called E.G.Benford. I
have several of his brass badged machines.I love this machine.
The picture depicts the transformation of the Victorian age
from sail to steam. This ship still has both, you can see the
smoke from the stack as well as the sails on the ocean liner.
A new era was dawning.Well that’s it for now, I will add more when
time allows. I do hope you enjoyed browsing some of my
collection.

sussexsewing Press Release 1

It has been another busy week in our little corner of South East
England. Eastbourne is bathing in glorious sunshine at the start of our
visitor’s season. The hotels are all dusting off and the tables are being placed on
the verandas for breakfast by the sea. Although Eastbourne (east of the River Bourne) has
been around for many hundreds of years. The great Roman fort of Pevensey still stands in
proud testament to our distant invaders from 2000 years ago. Eastbourne is primarily a
tourist town made famous by the Royal’s and their visits during the 19th century.I met one lady whilst out on a call, that actually was a servant
for King George V whilst he convalesced here back in the thirties. She told me all about
the strict secrecy that surrounded his stay and how tea and sandwiches of salmon and
cucumber were served every day after his short walk at 4pm. I have even been to the house
where he stayed and fixed a Singer Futura in his room, it was for a most elegant lady. The
room remains almost untouched from the day he left and is like stepping back in time to a
grander world.Today because the weather was just so glorious, after dropping
my wife off to work I decided to walk along the sea front, from the pier that attracts
more visitors than the Grand Canyon, to the Lighthouse at Beachy Head. It is a long walk
but the smell of the sea and the early morning sun on my back made the walk a delight. As I got away from civilisation I stopped while my dog, Rolly,
chased seagulls from the rocks and absorbed the real essence of the day. The barnacles on
the rocks were clicking, sounding like applause in the distance, drifting out from a
theatre, the sea was lapping gently at the sand and the sun was sparkling like diamonds
dancing on the tips of the waves. The blue sky reflected of the sea making it look
distinctly Mediterranean. In the distance boats were fishing, hoping to find the first run
of the summer Bass and the smell was pure heaven, a cool salty smell of fresh seaweed and
nature. After about an hour of hopping over weed covered rocks where
little pools of sea life were captured from the retreating tide, I arrived at the huge red
and white stripped lighthouse. Built around the turn of the century to warn sailors at
night of the dangers that lie beneath the surface at this outcrop of land. Many ships have
run aground and the crew perish in the cold dark waters off Beachy Head. I looked up the
face of the white cliffs. There stands Devil’s Chimney, 600 ft of sheer cliff. This is the
notorious suicide spot where many a life has come to an end. While it is morbid spot, it
is also the most beautiful place on earth to die. I sat for a while and let Rolly frolic
around on the sand, as children my parents would bring us to this very special place, our
secret beach, for picnics. A patch of sand amongst the rocks a hidden lagoon far away from
tourists, a touch of paradise. Unfortunately (or not depending on your point of view) in
recent years nudists have taken over the beach and in high summer they prance about like
peacocks (in more ways than one). As a kid I often wanted to take a catapult and hide
amongst the rocks and give them some schoolboy humour right on they’re bare bums. After a short break I headed homeward and took a path up the
cliffs to a grassy track that runs along the base of the Downs. I stopped for a while to
exchange good mornings with a fox that sprang out of nowhere. He looked at me as if I was
trespassing and was not a bit afraid of my dog, how dare I interrupt his hunt for
breakfast. The Downs are home to millions of rabbits ever since the Norman’s bought them
here for their tables. As I walked back the sun was warming up and butterflies were
starting their daily hunt for nectar amongst the Downland flowers. A rare Sussex Blue
butterfly flitted along the path as I walked, the soft grass cushioning my feet with every
step. As I came toward the town the first place I came too was my old school. Children’s
voices drifted up on the gentle breeze, the echoes of children playing sounding like a
swimming baths full of people enjoying themselves. What a great place to have a school and
how lucky I was to go there, to play hockey and rugby and cricket on the Downland turf, to
learn about life while gazing out the windows to the sea, to learn poetry while the
curtains in the upstairs dormitories billowed in, pushed from a wild sea wind as we heard
our headmaster read aloud from the Highwayman.” The wind was a torrent of darkness amongst the gusty
trees, The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas, The Road was a ribbon of
moonlight across the purple moor, and the highwayman came riding- riding- riding, The
highway man came riding, up to the old inn door.”By the time I got to the car a few people had started to move,
Eastbourne was coming to life, the local newsagents was busy delivering papers and the
milkman rattled passed me bottles clinking in the milk float, the postman had stopped to
chat with a man I had passed earlier on the beach who had been prawning, they were both
examining his catch, peering down admiringly into a plastic shopping bag full of
prawns.I made my way home to open the post and start another day, a
whole pile of machines to repair and service and the usual bunch of mail to open. The
closure of our local Singer shop after 60 years has put even more work on my plate. As I
got to the gate the first cloud of the day floated passed. I headed indoors and put the
coffee on.

I set off as usual, on my sewing machine repair
rounds. First stop to a water damaged `Gamages` special, a sixties straight stitch that had
been in the floods. The shuttle had seized, but after a bit of persuasion with some WD40
and copious amounts of elbow grease, it came back to life. Then inland up to Burwash and Rudyard Kipling land. Burwash is a
part of the country that is so English, cream teas and thatched cottage land. Here I met
an old acquaintance, a stockbroker who had retired down from London a few years back. As I
fixed his wife’s Frister & Rossmann Cub, he told me how he started at the bottom of
the Stock Exchange in the City, forty years earlier.During the fixing of the machine whose tension had collapsed, I
heard how he worked his way up from a Blue Buttons, Runners, Runner (lowest of the low) to
the chairman of the board. He had spent a lifetime without touching a paint brush or
ladder. At 65 he had to learn how real people lived and worked, not how to open six
bottles of Bollinger at a party. Then off down the sodden country lanes to Framfield. Hedge
sparrows were fighting over the last ivy berries that clung to the dying branches. Ferns
that had been a vibrant green all summer had turned to a deep red, as they have done every
year since the time that Mammoths strode these lands. The roads were paved with fresh
autumn leaves of a thousand shades and water was running across my path in new found
streams; making its way down to the sea some 15 miles away. The whole countryside sodden
and in its shabby overcoat, but still full of life. Squirrels were busily collecting the
Horse Chestnuts and conkers ready for the lean winter months ahead. As I stopped outside Pump Cottage an enthusiastic large Lurcher
greeted me, and a ginger tom cat. By the door knocker hung two Pheasant, I leaned over and
sniffed them to see how long they had been hanging. They smelt of the countryside and the
fresh earth, they must have been shot that morning. it would be a few days before the
familiar smell that country people wait for appears, only then will they be roasted. I had
been to the cottage five years earlier and remembered the old Jones machine that had been
worked hard, mending everything from the hubby’s overhauls to the children’s Halloween
costumes. It was in a well used state and took some time to bring back to life. On the
settee I was watched by the Lurcher who reminded me of a drunk Lord stretched out by the
fire, lazily gazing at the tail of the ginger tom that twitched nearby. “Its a hard
life” I thought. Then off to a caravan park to a little old lady who had returned
from Spain with an ailing Alfa. The Alfa was in a beautiful honey Beech cabinet, small and
compact and inlaid with different coloured woods. She had bought it from Estapona and
although it was made in the 50’s it was superb. In the drawer was a tin of De Reszke
cigarettes, now used for pins. On the side, next to a rather `spiffing`gentleman, it said,
“Cigarettes to the aristocracy”.The poor old dear had a stroke a while back and had to be taught
how to sew with a treadle again. It took some time but in the end she clicked, and off she
went, like a kid on her first bike. All finished, I turned the Land Rover toward home and
a well needed break. The sun began to break through the heavy cloud, throwing shafts
of light through the grey canopy, just to remind me that it won’t rain forever. I passed
near the Cuckmere Valley that has become an inland sea; much as it must have been at one
time, long ago. Flocks of migrating birds were heading over the cliffs, toward the golden
coasts of Spain and Africa, for an easy winter. I thought I would stop off at Beachy Head on the way home. I
climbed up the green turf, up, ever higher, I climbed so high that I could see forever.
Beachy Head is a magical place, and sometimes you can see so far that if you look hard
enough you can see the future. If you would like to read more stories like this, go to publications.

Home Sewing Machines – Find new and used home and commercial sewing machines.’It is astonishing how, in a few years, the sewing machine has made such strides in popular favor, [going from] a mechanical wonder [to] a household necessity …’ – Scientific American 1859

In 1791, when Thomas Saint first patented the design for a sewing machine, he only imagined that it might one day be used on tough materials such as canvas and leather.Difficult to sew by hand, British Inventor Saint envisioned a machine that would be used sewing boots together.Though he may have considered these machines as industrial sewing machines, his designs were never built in to a working model and a later attempt to do so resulted in a sewing machine that didn’t sew at all.

The Brit may have been sore to learn that instead, in 1830 a French tailor by the name of Barthelemy Thimmonier patented and built what was deemed the first practical sewing machine. The new sewing machine sewed a straight chain stitch seam using a hooked needle that was suitable for many different fabrics. He built 80 of his commercial sewing machine and put them in to use in a factory sewing French Army uniforms in the 1840s. Angry French tailors, however, fearing the sew machine and its challenge to their socioeconomic position, destroyed the factory, leaving Thimmonier bankrupt and hiding in England.

Ignoring the fates of earlier sewing machines and their creators, American Walter Hunt set out to build a sew machine that did not attempt to recreate the work of hand sewing. Instead, it produced a lockstitch and was the first machine to do so.Hunt did not see value in his machine, however, and sold it off without acquiring a patent.

In 1845, Elias Howe sought and won patent on a sew machine built on the principals of Hunt`s design with some modification. When he couldn’t sell his invention, even after repeatedly winning speed testing, he traveled back to the old sewing machine home of England and attempted to sell there. He was unsuccessful and when he returned home to the United States, he found his patent being infringed upon. He ultimately won lawsuits that made in a $2 millionaire by the time the patent lapsed in the late 1860s.Saint, Thimmonier, Hunt, and Howe may have invented the new sewing machine, but Isaac Merritt Singer made it, well, sing. Singer`s design pulled from the ideas of all his predecessors as well as his own background as a mechanic (his background in theater had little to do with the invention). Best Sewing Machine Reviews For Beginners 2013: Singer 42259 ReviewAmazon.com Widgets
Singer 42259 Review

I almost regretted not having chosen a digital Singer. the Singer 42259 is mechanical. On one hand, I read the comments of users on Amazon, often delighted by the digital (easy threading needle, thread tension automatically) in a forum, I read that the mechanics are solid, wears slower. Finally, I discovered my “mechanical” freshly bought, and I immediately thought that the sewing machine has not changed much over time. Reminds me of my very very old machine! Here is the imperfections that I blame him for advice and avoid small problems:

The machine has no instructions in French, in German only (annoying to understand the system of various feet, winding cans) Amazon will send it immediately to download in French on request only.

4 cans, it is not enough for a seamstress. All fashion lovers know that it is not enough. Buy expensive cans. There is no job cans only, buy the kit gives you more than four and accessories you already have. I found a dozen on Ebay, offers rare.

Pedal: it disappointed me, a beautiful machine, and a small plastic pedal, not practical at all, probably fragile. I thought to myself, this is the first thing that breaks (…) I had applied to control my pace of work, because too much speed creates son who break or get stuck in the trap of the bobbin . I do not understand that Singer did not think to provide a more ergonomic pedal, bigger and stronger. I use bare foot with the tip of my toes now, to feel my support more “delicate”. Another flaw that can be controlled over time, and this problem is connected to the pedal frankly: handle backspace, that is pressed to set a thread seam end. Here, attention, take a time for action: (I’m too ultra fast) time for each movement: stop sewing, press the rewind lever, gently press the pedal, make only a few points behind no more! where is the problem? If you press too much on your pedal too fast on the lever back, and it “Galoppe”, you’ll have your son stuck, and having to disassemble everything to loosen the thread locker can. I come now to avoid this very unpleasant, but strangely it slows my workflow.

A first purchase to start without special knowledge, probably oversized for the work that I do, but this material inspires dy spend her days.Operation manual actually delivered in German, French received by return mail after a request placed on the singer site.I had already started without instructions and realized a tablecloth: use instinctive and simple, but with many program that allows a wide range of possibilities.carrying bag a little lighter, it will give me the opportunity to make one!

I’ve always struggled to make use of a sewing machine where passing the wire, thread the needle, in short, so I gave up galley. And anyway, in a house, it is convenient to carry out its self curtains or bedspreads, and be able to change a zipper on a jacket. With this machine, more metaphysical problem: the path of the wire is signposted, and the automatic needle threader solves the problem for all those who do not see enough of them around to put thread through the eye of the needle. So for all those who want to go safely, this is ideal. I used to make pillows and I must say that I had a little trouble at first, but since I started using this more regularly sewing machine at home, I must say it is a little better!Good product I recommend, especially for its convenience and speed of delivery.I quickly got home!

Best Sewing Machine Reviews For Beginners 2013: March 2013Amazon.com WidgetsNo experience sewing I managed to take control. We must adjust the
thread tension depending on the tissue. For simple jobs (hemming pants) need to pay a seamstress. But it is not
suitable for further work.

I was looking for a sewing machine
“travel” handy to take anywhere and easy to approach because not knowing
much about sewing machines the grip and the first tests are very simple
and accessible to all.The manual explains how to feed wire which leads
to small little understanding of the operation of the machine.little
trick properly connect the wall outlet and the pedal and press it gently
on the latter: it is gone! ^ ^In the package, accessories are provided:
one spare needle, a needle threader and 4 other cans 2 with wire (one
white and one black). As in the photo, the machine comes with a small
piece of fabric and embroidered started work as an example of short,
perfect for beginners and help =)

Object (Made in China) does
not work. It is so light that the slightest movement causes it to fall,
the engine power ridiculous (batteries are optional) and the needle does
not fit in very fine fabrics. The result is in the best case a sequence
of points uneven and strained. I expect my daughter to grow up to give
him this toy.I expected to do odd jobs (like hem) with this little
sewing machine, as probably many singles. So be careful this machine is
small but she can not sew. There is no miracle at this price you buy a
price, and certainly not a quality product.

After several disappointments in other brands, and especially a small budget. I am not disappointed!Missing some points stretch, which is not a surprise to many who watched the images produced, but the quality and reliability are there, even on heavy fabrics (denim, upholstery …). A little time to adjust the tension of the wire and go!

I just got my machine with a day in advance so next shipment am very satisfied.Product side one excelling nothing wrong value. She is able to create the stitches most used and to perform all daily tasks hems, patching, mending, etc. … Everything is there with a lot of accessories and tuning tools even lighting is integrated. That asked for more? A French manual would be welcome at the same time this is what must explain the price. Know that there is a link to download it directly from the product file on the site. Printer leaves and voila. Given the price, do not hold your purchase because of manual language.

I do not regret my purchase especially when I compare the prices practiced in supermarkets or specialized shops. So I highly recommend it for everyday use, it will fulfill its functions perfectly.Even though I am a man who until now was sewing an unknown world, I bought it, and I’m delighted after qq tests on simple things, I threw myself into making a corsair pants and a vest polyester, this summer … great result, happy with my creation …But I do not understand the comments of other users, because I have a manual in French …For those who want to see the result by photos, do not hesitate to contact me …

I chose this model because it was the buttonholes all alone and I’m not disappointed. I am a beginner in sewing and before I used the old sewing machine given by my mother, a singer too. I cracked to this one, because it buttonholes all alone, then, and she does it well. But also because it offers many points. The automatic threading and the passage of the son are simple. The storage box in the arm of the machine is convenient.Only downside, end bobbin or coil wire out and sometimes passers machine “fluff”.

The machine arrived very quickly in a very neat package and I was notified by mail.Immediately unpacked and tested, what fun!! Ultra simple, quiet, fast. The automatic threading the upper thread and buttonhole one time, what progress! A number of important points for effective and original stitching.Good design, lightness makes it a great machine. In summary, both the seller delighted that the machine complies with Singer’s reputation. The instructions are in German, but very easy to download multiple sites.

Very good product that meets my expectations. The only criticism I can make: the operating instructions of the machine is in German (luckily, we can find the instructions in French on the net).

The needle threader is very convenient, the basic points are the points most useful to do almost anything in fashion. She looks robust (recent purchase)The manual is indeed in German but the drawings are clear and useful Google translation.Being able to choose the length and width of the point is really appreciable

I just receive it and I spent the day sewing (about 8 hours in total). No particular concern to share common concerns encountered with any machine (over jumps or breaks) usually due to improper thread tension that was made and is corrected seam . The problem is the manual in German and English. Fortunately I know the system more or less the same as the domestic brands but I’m still not a request for French instruction in case of problems. In the removable part, the inside of the machine comprises metal parts which reassures for the duration. Cans are supplied with plastic, they are quite useful because I’ve tried but I’m more comfortable with MY cans scrap. My mother had the habit of sewing that I examined her and found it very good for the price and the features it has, which is more than enough for the family sewing, except for very superimposed, thick, thick leather or heavy woolens VERY thick as winter jackets for example. Very good product for the value, I recommend it because I’m happy.

It is a small simple machine makes buttonholes with the minimum and should therefore use a base. Two small gripes that I do (but again this is a first prize): – this is the plastic spool holder and non-integrated non-telescopic as you can find on other machines. Instead it is a plastic holder that clips onto the top rear. Therefore when one arranges the machine must remove each time otherwise it could break touching a closet door or even by hand. – Small second thing is the lamp cover and the front of the mechanism, it must be unscrewed and then must clip it is too long and too restrictive because the clip is very hard and to impression that forcing it will break.

Good sewing quality standpoint price. I am a man and I find all the features my mother had hers and more. Very good product!

plumbers – 11/20/17

There are household plumbing emergencies that happen at times when you cannot find a plumber to help you. Leaks are quite easy to control and stop temporarily until the plumber arrives. Simple and common sense tips are available to be applied when you have plumbing emergencies. This article will help you to control leaks temporarily.

Number one thing that you can do is to turn off the main water valve to impede the spurt or leak of water. This will depend on how strong the spurt or leak is since you can opt to close the main water valve or just the valve under the sink. This will enable you to have access to water while stopping the leak on the problematic pipe. If you have water valve sin each of your faucet then you will have this option of turning off only the affected faucet’s valve.

Now, how about if you do not have valves for each faucet? Epoxy can be utilized to cover off the leaks that you see. The main water valve should be turned off and then let dry before applying the epoxy to the affected area. You should dry the area thoroughly with a towel and then apply the epoxy to cover the leaks. Let dry and then turn off the main water valve once it is thoroughly dried.

Electrical tape and duct tape is also a good thing to use temporarily. If you have a big crack then you can use a pipe clamp for it. What you do is to get a piece of tire rubber and cut it to fit around the area of the crack in the pipe. The C clamp can be utilized to hold the rubber in place.

Remember that these are only temporary solutions and you still need to have it fixed by a plumber. Calling a plumber first before trying any of these things should be the number one step that you should do. It is still best that you have professional plumbers working on your plumbing problems.

When you need your plumbing fixed right away see us at plumbing San Diego. Our staff of trained plumbers can get to your home and get your plumbing fixed right away when you call us at our plumber in Point Loma office.

Tubs and Showers
When it comes time to remodel your current bathroom, or you simply want an updated look, tub and shower replacement are a great way to modernize your bathroom’s appeal and function. From basic white, one-piece fiberglass units to contemporary cast-iron claw foots, multi-piece arrangements or complete tile walls, tub and shower replacements are an easy way to change the look of your bathroom while opening up the door to many custom and unique options along the way.

Many options are available when replacing a tub assembly. If the tub is a tub/shower combo as in many homes, it has three walls and an entrance, and is normally made of fiberglass. Sometimes one piece, sometimes multi-piece, this assembly can be purchased in many colors with hundreds of wall designs and unique etched patterns. Replacement is basically straight-forward, with the demo/removal of the old tub combo the largest portion of the job. Installation of the new assembly involves hooking up the drainage and tub/shower valve, then sealing everything.

Stand-alone claw-foot tubs are an older design that has recently regained popularity. Elegant and contemporary in appearance, claw foot tubs sit on the floor away from any surrounding walls, with the drain stubbed up from the floor directly behind it. The tub/shower valve resembles a faucet, and is attached to the edge of the tub on a designated end. Claw-foot tubs range higher in price due to their design and construction, and are significantly heavier that standard fiberglass units. Installation is, once again, fairly simple, just setting the tub in place and connecting drainage and water supplies.

Replacing a shower involves a few more decisions. Showers are typically of the fiberglass type as well, while some are complete tile assemblies with a shower pan underneath (see “Shower Pans” section). Replacing a fiberglass assembly with another unit of the same style and size is relatively easy, and the most common type of replacement. The shower valve and drainage are disconnected, and the old shower assembly is pulled out. The new shower is then installed, connecting everything back up and sealing all the edges. Removal of sheetrock or wall material is usually necessary to accommodate the complete installations, as access to the shower valve is necessary. Replacing a tile shower is much more involved, and as such is more expensive. Removal of all the tile work is the first step. This alone is tedious work and can take some time. Disconnecting the drainage and shower valve is necessary. The shower pan is now accessible. If replacement of the shower pan is needed (older pans were made of lead, and often leaked), now is the time to perform that job. Once all prep work has been completed, including valve replacement, drain work, and if necessary, the shower pan, a tile man can now come and reinstall all of the tiling, with thousands of colors and design options. Plumbers DO NOT perform this task. Once all the tile has been replaced, a plumber can come back and “trim out” the shower, installing the shower arm, handle, and trim plate.

FaucetsAll sinks in your home have some sort of faucet attached. Single handle or two handle, faucets are the outlets of fresh water inside the house. They come in hundreds of different styles, finishes, sizes, and shapes. Your kitchens, bathroom sink (lavatories), and utility sinks all require a faucet for operation, and we service and install them ALL.

Homeowners replace faucets for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes faucets begin to drip after many years. Some corrode and rust. Some crack or break. Other times homeowners become tired of their current faucets and want to update the look of their kitchens and bathrooms. In 99% of new faucet installations, we recommend that you go out and purchase the faucet of your choice. This is because there are SO MANY different styles of faucets on the market that if we were to simply pick one up for you, the odds of us getting the one you want are slim to none. Buying one yourself guarantees that you will get exactly what you are looking for, and seeing as how our prices rarely change due to the model or brand, your installation fees remain consistent. Fees only differ for lavatory and kitchen faucets. During the installation process, we will remove and dispose of your old faucet, and install your new unit, ensuring that everything functions properly before we leave. Labor warranty is our standard 12-month, with the faucet’s warranty depending on the manufacturer.

Not all faucet problems require complete replacement of the entire assembly. In many instances we can make small repairs to the faucet’s internal components to stop leaks or other problems. The replacement of small parts such as washers, springs, and cartridges can be a less expensive alternative to complete faucet replacement, sometimes halving the total cost to you. Often times simply repairing the existing faucet will give you many more years of reliable service without incident. No matter what make or model, style or finish, we service all faucets and can find almost any part required to complete the job. As always, all faucet repairs carry our 12-month warranty. Faucet replacements carry this, as well as the manufacturer’s warranty on the faucet itself (usually 10 years or lifetime).

Toilets
Ever woken up in the middle of the night to the sound of a running toilet? Stumbling your way through the dark to jiggle the handle has never been a fun proposition, however, almost every toilet will, at some point, begin to run, leak, or make odd noises. This is simply the nature of the parts inside a toilet’s tank that comprise the flushing system. With a combination of brass, rubber, plastic, and other materials, there are multiple points for possible failure. Leaks from rusty tank bolts or cracked fill valve shanks are common as well. Fill valves begin to wear out and allow excess water to enter the tank, flappers become warped and allow water to run into the bowl, and even the toilet’s flush handle can rust. We will resolve each and every one of these issues for you quickly and professionally, giving your toilets several more years of reliable, trouble-free usage.

When toilets reach a certain age, it is often best to simply replace the entire toilet itself rather than bother with smaller, detailed repairs. If your toilets are reaching 25-30 years of age, the flush pathways inside them are growing narrower and narrower with a build-up of calcium and lime, increasing the probabilities of clogs. There is no repair for this. In such cases, or if you simply want to update the look of your bathrooms with newer and higher quality equipment, it’s time to replace your toilets. With literally thousands of different models and styles out there, there is guaranteed to be something out there for everyone. Prices for new toilets can range anywhere from $100 all the way up to and exceeding $3500, showcasing every possible feature you could think of. Though rare on lower priced models, features such as automatic flushing, heated seats, and LED lighting are available. We recommend that the homeowner purchase their own toilets and then have us install them. We suggest this due to the wide variety of toilet styles, colors, and features. We will answer any questions you may have along the way in your search for new toilets, as well as offer advice on brand selection, feature necessities, and pricing options. Regardless of which toilets you choose, we install them all, and we’ll even dispose of your old ones for you at no additional charge.

Misc Valves
The water system in your home is a complex network of piping and valves. While the piping tends to require little to no maintenance most of the time, plumbing valves are a different story. These small valves are located everywhere from under your sinks to behind your toilets, from your water heater to your icemaker, from your dishwasher to your clothes washer. Also known as cut-offs, stops, or shut-offs, these valves all perform the same function: stopping the supply of water to a certain fixture or area of the home. There is a large valve one on your main water line close to where it enters the home, next to your PRV (see” Pressure Valves” section), allowing you or your plumber to shut off the water to your entire home, allowing maintenance of the system. While all performing the same function, these valves are constructed in several ways and are used in specific locations throughout the house.

“Stops” is the name generally given to the valves located under sinks and behind toilets. These small, usually brass valves are used to cut off the supply of water to one fixture. They function on a simple shaft and rubber washer system, and often fail after repeated use. Small, slow drips are usually the first sign of an impending problem, and the valve should be immediately replaced.

Gate valves and ball valves are heavier-duty units used to isolate water at specified points of your plumbing system. They are in-line valves, meaning they are installed between two points of a waterline. Gate valves are usually made of brass, and employ a multi-turn handle to open or close a thick brass “gate” inside the valve body, thereby cutting off the supply of water. These valves are often found on water mains, above water heaters, and on various lines throughout the home. Ball valves are also generally made of brass, and are operated using a lever-type handle that swivels a core-less brass “ball” inside the valve body. Because of this design, ball valves require only 90 degrees of rotation to operate, rather than the multi-turn gate valves. While both types of valves function well, gate valves are more prone to failure after many years due to their construction, which employs a threaded brass rod to operate the gate. These rods often corrode and break, rendering the valve useless.

Another type of in-line valve found in some homes (and on most water meters) is called a check valve. This component of the plumbing system uses a one-way “door” inside the valve, which allows water to pass through the valve once, and never flow back through. These valves are generally used to eliminate the possibility of contaminants that have entered the water in the home from passing back out to the county or city lines. Two types of “doors” are employed in a check valve. The first functions just like a door in your home, swinging on a hinge inside the valve, opening and closing with water flow. The other, known as a spring-check, uses a plate attached to a spring that opens and closes with pressure, allowing water to flow around its edges, closing the valve when pressure is equalized.

Just like any other mechanical item with moving parts, these valves fail on occasion. Add to that the presence of water, a highly corrosive (yes, really) liquid, and you have the recipe for problems. We install and replace ALL of these valves and more. We will also install additional valves in areas of your home if you prefer, adding to the serviceability of your plumbing system, saving you time and money during future service calls.

Copper Pipe Repair
A large percentage of America’s homes have interior copper water piping, servicing all of the home’s plumbing fixtures. Toilets, faucets, water heaters, hose connections…all are often fed by copper piping. Copper is an excellent material to have in your home. It’s clean, sturdy, and handles temperature and pressure changes well. But let’s face it, even the highest quality products fail from time to time. Copper is no exception. Sometimes, small leaks will form on the joints connecting the copper piping together, dripping, unbeknownst to you, inside your walls or into your ceilings. Transition joints (copper joining plastic pipe) are also common locations for leaks. These small leaks can cause big problems, damaging sheetrock, hardwood floors, and carpeting. We will locate and access these leaks with minimal invasiveness or damage to walls or flooring, make the necessary repairs, and thoroughly test the system before we leave.

Copper piping often services the connections to your water heater. Water heater inlets often leak due to age and to the corrosion of the galvanized stubs that connect the water lines to the top of the heater. We will remove these faulty fittings and replace them with dielectric (corrosion-eliminating) fittings to remove any chance of future corrosion.

Copper was once the most popular material for main water lines, servicing your home from the street. Unfortunately, copper has weak areas that will often oxidize underground, causing severe leaks. It is not ALWAYS necessary to replace the entire waterline when this occurs. As such, we will dig and expose the leak, make any necessary repairs, cover everything back up, restore your water service and leave you with a full warranty. If the leak happens to be located at the penetration point (where the waterline enters the home), we can remove the faulty section and replace it, encasing it within a sleeve to ensure no future corrosion issues.

Slab Leaks
Many homes are built without a basement or crawlspace, instead locating the larger comfort systems (HVAC, water heaters, etc.) in the attic or utility rooms. These homes are supplied with water in the same manner as others, but the waterline penetrates the home through the slab, or the solid concrete foundation on which the home is built. The main waterline generally penetrates the slab at or near the water heater, but branches out underneath the slab to different parts of the house to feed the home’s plumbing fixtures, jutting up through the slab at each location and supplying the faucets, toilets, etc. In older homes, the waterlines were made of gray poly (see “Water Pipe Repair” section), and were subject to constant problems. Being buried in the ground under the slab, the gray poly lines would frequently burst or split due to contact with rocks, or suffer similar problems due to temperature changes. But most of all, it was due to gray poly’s inferiority as a product. Copper pipes were also used under some homes, and were less prone to leaks. Often times, leaks on copper waterlines under the slab were attributed to the pipe not being properly wrapped or protected. Regardless, water leaks under the slab were problems for obvious reasons, with access to the pipes being impossible without destroying sections of the home’s foundation.

When a slab leak occurs, the most common sign is a dramatic increase in your monthly water bill. On occasion, if a hot waterline is the culprit, you will feel a temperature increase on the floor while walking in bare feet. Whether the break is on a hot or cold line, leak detection (see “Water Leak Detection” section) services will be necessary to determine the exact location of the leak. We offer this service at a very competitive rate, and will work the cost into the cost of the repair. Leak detection requires very specialized equipment designed to pinpoint water leaks in almost any location within a home. The equipment is very accurate, usually within inches.

Once the leak has been successfully located, accessing the leak is the next step. To do this, Any flooring in the area must be removed, stripping down to the bare concrete slab. Cutting or jack hammering of the concrete is then necessary to open a hole around the leak. Even then, the waterlines are buried to a depth up to 18 inches. After digging down to the waterlines and clearing away the mud caused by the leak itself, the repair can be made. After this is complete, the lines are pressure-tested to ensure proper operation. The repair is then wrapped, and the dirt is filled back into the hole. We then re-pour the concrete that was removed, leveling and smoothing the surface flush with the surrounding floor. After this new concrete is allowed to dry, the flooring can be repaired or replaced as necessary.

At times, drain lines under slab homes suffer breaks as well. This is often due to faulty initial construction. The drain lines sometimes separate or crack. The problem usually presents itself as a clog or slow-draining fixture, and can only be located with a drain camera. With the camera, the exact location of the problem can be determined, and the slab removed as with a waterline leak. The repair process is similar; fixing the piping, filling the hole, and concreting back over the spot, smoothing it out again. Before the concrete is re-poured however, we camera the newly repaired section once more to ensure that all repairs were successful. We then test the line with water to check for leaks. Once everything is covered up, the flooring may be repaired.

Plumbing is a job that cannot be ignored by people. Even recession does not seem to affect the business of plumbing. Since people need to have heating, cooling and water systems all okay everday. This is where plumbers enter the scene. On this page, you will learn what plumbers specifically do for this job.

Usually plumbers install and repair your pipes. Your water system, gas systems, drainage systems and waste disposal systems are also responsibilities of your plumber. Plumbers also are responsible for installing and repairing sinks, tubs, showers, toilets and heaters. Plumbers are reliable people to help you repair or install all of these things. Any plumbing problems can be fixed by your plumber.

Plumbers do not solely repair things once you tell them. They also assess the condition and structure of the house. They will require you to show them the blueprint of your house. Through that document, they will be able to determine and measure the layout of your pipes. Plumbing connections are also made easy with the help of the blueprint.

Your plumber also know the basics of carpentry and electric wirings. This is because they are also made to drill some holes and cut through wood to install wirings and connections for their pipes. Bracing pipes in place is also part of their task. Welding is done for pipes to fit perfectly as well. It is imperative that plumbers know a little about the electrical system.

They also do regular maintenance check. All you need to do is get your house scheduled for the maintenance check. This will make sure that you have all systems in tip top shape.

All of those things are what plumbers do. They give their best abilities to repair your systems.

So have your plumbing running smoothly with us at Vista plumbers. Where you will see our experience with our Rancho Bernardo plumbers office.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Company

What form of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, local checks, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.
What are your payment terms?

All our jobs are COD, which means you pay us when the work is done. Some of our bigger projects usually have a payment schedule from the day they were billed, unless we have specified different payment terms in the contract.
Why should I choose Knightdale Plumbing Inc., and not another company?

Most of our clients come to us by referral. We are not commission-based, which means we pay our technicians a salary whether or not they sell a job. That way they can really concentrate on what the client really needs instead of worrying about the commissions they could make out of each service call. Our company has a lot of experience especially with new construction and remodels. Our pricing is honest and transparent. Depending on your needs we can either do a time and material job or give you a bid up front. There are never any hidden costs.
Toilets

What is a low flow toilet and is it worth buying?

It uses a lot less water to flush your waste down the drain. A low flow toilet usually uses about only 1.6 gpf (gallons per flush) to get rid of your waste. Most cities or counties will even give you a rebate if you install a low flow toilet.
How do I know if my toilet is leaking?

Sometimes leaking toilets can go un-noticed for a long time and is the most common cause for an expensive water bill. Signs that your toilet is in need of repair or might be leaking:

Water keeps running from the tank into the toilet bowl after it has been flushed. Sometimes it is just noticed as a little trickle down the toilet bowl sides.
After flushing the toilet the tank won’t fill again and you can’t flush again.
You have to move or jiggle the toilet handle to make the stop flushing or running water.
The toilet handle is loose.
You have to keep holding down the toilet handle while flushing in order to complete the flushing process.
Any water spots or mold along the wall behind the tank.
Phantom flushing: your toilet turns the water on without your flushing it.
A toilet that is not being used should be silent. Any noise coming from it might be an indicator of a problem or a leak.
What is a “low boy” toilet?

A low boy toilet is an older model of toilets, which are hardly installed anymore. They are about 15 inches of the ground, like a normal toilet, however they have a very low water tank at the rear of the toilet, which gives its it name.
What is the difference between a handicapped toilet and a regular toilet?

A handicapped toilet has a raised seat so that elderly or handicapped people can get up from the toilet much easier. Usually it is raised by 18 inches from the floor.
My toilet is not flushing and water is backing up into my shower, what is wrong?

You either have a clogged drain or sewer line. We usually use a drain cleaning machine or a rooting machine. This is a cable type drain machine that sends a long cable down your drain usually attached with some sort of cutting head at the end. This cutting head will cut through roots or will clean out what ever is blocking the sewer and drain pipes. The cable comes in different sizes to fit different fixtures from tubs to small sinks and large sewer lines.
Garbage Disposals

My garbage disposal broke down, what should I do?

Don’t hurry out to buy a new garbage disposal – breaking down could be due to various reasons and the disposal may not need to be replaced right away. Something might have just blocked the blades from moving. First, make sure the disposal is not jammed with a hard object (spoons, etc). Please make sure the garbage disposal is TURNED OFF or even disconnected from the power. If you don’t find anything that could have jammed the disposal, try to reset it with the reset button (usually located underneath the garbage disposal) or check your breaker switch in your breaker box. If all fails call us at (919) 266-0377 for service.
What size or model of garbage disposal should I get?

Looking for the right garbage disposal might be a little baffling: there are so many sizes, models and vendors. However, the main difference in garbage disposals is the power output. Garbage disposals usually come in 1/2, 3/4, and 1 horse power models. Our recommendations are: ½ horse power models for light kitchen use, ¾ horse power for a normal household use, and 1 horse power model for heavy home use or small commercial use.
What should I NOT put down my garbage disposal?

Fibrous foods, such as celery, asparagus, or artichokes, are bad for your garbage disposal.
My garbage disposal stinks, what should I do?

There are two ways of cleaning your garbage disposal. You could buy commercial garbage disposal cleaners and dump them down the drain. Or you could use a cup of ice cubes and run the garbage disposal to clean the blades. To give your sink a better smell, we recommend using some lemon juice and lemon peel.
Why is water backing up into my sink when I run the dishwasher?

Often there is a connection between the dishwasher and the drain from the disposal. If there is food left behind in the disposal it can clog that connection to the main drain and therefore the water backs up into your sink. To prevent this, you should make sure that your disposal is free of food before running the dishwasher. Run the garbage disposal with plenty of water before turning the dishwasher on.
Sinks/Faucets/Showers

Can old faucets be repaired?

It depends on the faucet. Usually we can fix any faucet. However, sometimes it is more efficient to replace an old faucet with a new one.
Which type of sink should I get for my kitchen?

There are different types of kitchen sink styles available in various materials. The style that suits you – like say, farmhouse or square – is mostly up to your taste. There are many different choices in materials and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common ones are stainless steel, cast iron, porcelain, and enameled steel. However you could also choose from various styles of corian, acrylic, fiberglass americast, or copper.
I am losing water pressure in my shower, what is causing this?

Your shower head could be plugged with water deposits such as rust and dirt from your pipes. You could try to remove the shower head from the pipe coming out of the wall and check it for deposits. Clean the shower head gently with an old toothbrush and rinse it to remove all the dirt. Also run the shower without the shower head on to possibly remove any left over dirt in the pipes to prevent the shower head from plugging up again. If cleaning your shower head didn’t take care of your low water pressure, give us a call at (919) 266-0377.
What is an ‘overflow’?

It is a “Water Break” for bathtubs. Technically, it will prevent a bathtub from overflowing with water and flooding your whole bathroom or house. Once the water reaches a certain level in the bathtub, it starts to drain through the overflow. So if you would ever walk away from your filling bathtub and forget about it, your overflow would prevent you from a flood, but not from a high water bill!
What is an ‘air gap’ and do I need one?

An “Air gap” is like a little two inch metal cap that sits at the top of your sink. This is supposed to prevent dirty water from backwashing back into your dishwasher. However, newer dishwashers and sinks with garbage disposals make it possible to eliminate this extra little metal cap. Consult your plumber and see, if you can run your dishwasher safely without having an “Air gap”.
Water Heaters

What size water heater should I get?

Water heaters come in different sizes and it depends on your size of living quarters and how many people are using hot water on a daily basis. A normal household with a family of four, two bathrooms, and regular appliances will get by with a 40 gal water heater.
Should I get a gas or electric water heater?

Sometimes you don’t really have a choice. However, if you do, consider the following:

Gas water heaters are more efficient because gas is cheaper and makes water hot faster.
Gas water heaters have a pilot light and have to be away from flammable liquids since they can pose a fire hazard.
Electric water heaters are more expensive to use, however they don’t require gas and flue piping.
Electric water heaters come in a lot of different sizes, as small as 3 gallons. They can be installed almost everywhere, such underneath a sink in a little apartment kitchen or a sink in a rest room.
How long does a water heater last?

It depends on the model/brand and maintenance of the water heater. A 5 year model will last anywhere from 5-7 years and a 10 year model can last up to 12 years. However, a lot depends on your water quality, and proper installation. You should check your water heater on a regular basis for any rust or corrosions around the valves and pipe connections. That will give you a good idea about the condition your water heater is in.
How do I maintain my water heater?

It is good to drain the water heater every now and then. Draining the water heater will clean the bottom of the water heater tank from harmful build ups. These build ups can cause the tank to overheat and shorten its life.
Is there a temperature setting on the water heater?

Yes, the normal water temperature setting for a water heater is 120 degrees F. Setting it at this temperature will prevent accidental burns from hot water coming out of the faucet. Some water heater models have a digital temperature control and can be set up to 190 degrees F.
===============

Replacing a water heater in your home may sound rather scary at first. You most likely assume that you have to not only pay for a new water heater, but also for someone to install it.

That could not be further from the truth. When your hot water heater sings its swan song, go ahead and buy a new one. Then, come home and install it yourself. It really is not that hard to do and plumbing experience is not required. Follow the steps below and you will feel a lot more confident about taking on this task by yourself.

Step One:

Obviously, the first thing that has to be taken care of is the removal of your old hot water heater. This is simple. Just turn off the gas or electricity that is powering it. Make sure you drain all of the water out of it. Keep in mind that the water will be hot so take care to not get burned. When that is completed, remove it from the gas or electric as well as the water pipes. These pipes may still contain hot water, so handle them with care. Now, you simply set it aside.

Step Two:

Put your new hot water heater in place. Do not handle it roughly as it has parts within it that can easily break if you do. Get it close to the pipes so you can hook it to them, and connect it. There will be an owner’s manual you can check if the water heater is hooked up differently from your old one. Recognizing an incorrect hook up is simple as the hot water will run cold and the cold water will run hot.

Step Three:

The last thing you will do is connect the gas or electricity. When it has been connected, turn your power back on. This is another area that may send you looking at the owner’s manual to make sure it is done correctly.

Do you see how simple it is? You are basically just reversing the steps you performed when you unhooked your broken water heater. Of course, if you run into any problems, the owner’s manual will have the solutions. This should be a task that you can complete in only a few minutes.

There is no need for any odd tools, although you will need a dolly in order to haul away the old water heater and bring in the new one. Finally, you will need to check with your local authorities to find out how the correct method of disposing of the old water heater.

One of the more important rooms in your home has to be the bathroom for obvious reasons. When something goes wrong in the bathroom, specifically with the toilet, life as you know it changes drastically. Calling a plumber may not be an option a lot of times.

For one thing, plumbers are at all-time shortage right now so you may find out it will be DAYS before he can make a visit to your home. Or you may not have the money to have your toilet professionally repaired. Take heart, as there are a couple of toilet problems you can fix by yourself.

The first of these is the running toilet. This is a problem that happens frequently. Most of the time, it can be remedied easily by buying a new flapper or ball assembly to replace broken ones. To fix the flapper, turn off the water to the toilet. Remove the lid from the toilet’s tank. Disconnect the flapper and go buy a new one. Nothing is easier to fix and the price is right at about $5. Sometimes you’ll have to clean mineral deposits from the tank but it’s not difficult. Use boiling water, vinegar and baking soda and you’re all set.

The second common toilet problem is the backed up toilet. This can be one of the most annoying and momentarily frightening things you’ll experience. Besides the ick factor, it puts your toilet out of commission for as long as it takes to unclog it.

Remember this: If you flush a toilet once and water rises rather than drains, DO NOT FLUSH AGAIN! Instead, remove the tank lid as fast as possible. Push the tank ball down so the flush valve closes. This stops rising water.

Most clogged toilets come from toys, sanitary products, or plastic items. If this is your problem, try removing the item instead of forcing it along. Clogs from regular flushed waste can be fixed by using a plunger or closet snake.

Try the plunger first. Wear rubber gloves, and drape a large towel over the toilet bowl and under the seat. For an empty bowl, add water to put it about half full. If it’s full, empty until the water is halfway. Use the plunger to seal the hole in the toilet bowl.

Push down slowly and quickly pull back. Begin slowly and work up to faster. If something is stuck in the opening of the drain, use a stiff wire to retrieve it. After dislodging the item, put a gallon of water into the bowl and flush.

Reverse Osmosis water systems have been around for years, and they offer some reasonable ways to purify water. However, the newer units are not as effective as their older counterparts. This is rather surprising since most new technology is better than the old.

Once upon a time, people living in rural areas had one source of water. This was usually a lake, river, or stream. Those people needed reverse osmosis water units to do a large part of water purification. However, the newer systems are made to use in homes that receive public water. These were basically developed because of a recommendation by the Environmental Protection Agency for people at risk.

All public sources can catch parasitic cysts. These are microscopic egg type forms of life and they are quite strong. It is not possible to remove them from water through the regular methods like chlorination, oxygenation, or UV radiation. The only way they can be removed is at your home faucets using submicron filtration methods.

It has been found that these cysts can be removed through the submicron membranes of reverse osmosis systems and systems using multi-media blocks of carbon and a sub-micron channel structure. The difference between these two methods is that the carbon system is a lot cheaper and protects you more.

The reverse osmosis units of the past did not take out the chemicals like chlorine and other items hazardous to your health because they were smaller and weighed less than the molecules of the water. Some of the newer units added granulated carbon to take out some of the chemicals.

However, people in the rural areas cannot use these because there is no ability to take out any larger contaminants that may be there. This system would get clogged quickly and the membranes damaged. The older systems had a lot wrong with them. This included waste water that was made and the energy needed. However, they were more effective in moving towards water that was cleaner and safer.

Newer reverse osmosis water systems are too expensive for most homeowners. On top of that, they might actually make more health issues for people at risk because they take out the good minerals without being able to catch the THMs. These are caused by chlorination and are in nearly all homes in America. THMs raise the chance by 30 percent of contracting bladder and colorectal cancer. Canadian research estimates show about 700 new cases annually that come directly from exposure to THM.

THMs can only be taken out with the adsorption process. The multi-media block systems are very effective at removing them. Reverse osmosis systems, however, do not do the job. The THMs are trapped through the multi-media block. Reverse osmosis water units, on the other hand, are not that advanced. What you get is water that is de-mineralized, tastes stale, and still has dangerous chemicals, including THMs.

Nothing is more frustrating than finding a leaking faucet or a toilet that won’t stop running. The worst thing about it is the amount you feel you are going to have to pay in order to get a professional plumber to come in and fix them.

The good news is that not every plumbing issue requires you to fork over your hard earned cash to someone that will spend, ultimately, 10 minutes in your home fixing your plumbing issues.

Basic plumbing issues will pop up from time to time, and most home owners have found this out the hard way. The best thing you can do is gain some knowledge on these basic plumbing issues, and how you can solve them on your own. This will not only save you money, but give you a feeling of confidence and self-reliance that you may not have ever had before.

Many things, such as a leaking faucet can be fixed by simply tightening a nut or replacing a faulty washer. The first thing you should do, however, is turn off your water from the main line that comes into your home. If this stops the leaking, then the water pressure is causing the water to overpass the faucet in some way, and can usually be fixed fairly easily. There is no reason that you would have to call in a professional to fix something as small as this, and your wallet will thank you for that decision.

If you find yourself getting into too much, then you probably should go ahead and call in someone that knows what they are doing. There is no reason that you should have to repair the entire toilet because of a simple running float. But accidents happen all the time and, let’s say, you tighten the overfill tube too tight, you could end up cracking the porcelain tank, causing a minor issue to turn dramatically into a major issue. At times like this, calling in a professional can end up saving you a bit of money instead of you having to replace the entire toilet on your own.

Just remember that having the proper tools is a necessity for any plumbing fixes you may find yourself having to take care of. Making use of the right tools will make your plumbing fixes go much easier for you and all those involved.
==============
There are times in your life when you need to think before you act. One of those times is with plumbing issues that may arise in your home. While some of the smaller issues, like a leaking faucet, may not require a professional to come in and solve it, there are other moments when you would really like to have someone that knows what they are doing, instead of causing more issues than you solve.

A lot of homeowners love the thought of being able “to do it yourself”. They get a sense of accomplishment, and it saves on the cost of labor in a very big way. There is a reason why plumbers cost so much to hire. It’s mostly because they end up fixing other peoples fixes that they screwed up to begin with, but also because they have a unique understanding of what is happening, and what it will take to fix the problem.

While you may want to do it yourself, there are times when the only right way to solve a problem is to have a professional come in and do the work for you. Although, if you have set up a good rapport with your local plumber, they may be able to give you some pointers that will make it easy for you to do the work yourself.
You can also use the internet these days to get all the information you could ever need to make those seemingly impossible fixes a walk in the park.

One thing that you have to always be aware of is safety. This is especially true when you are dealing with things like electricity and gas lines. Always make sure that the electricity or gas is shut off at the main entrance to your house before doing any fixes that will require the use of either. You should also keep in mind how your repairs are going to affect your household. If you have only one bathroom and your repair takes two of three days to fix and make it usable again, you should make sure that you have alternatives available for you and your family.

The only way to really get to the issue at hand is to be able to troubleshoot the existing problem. This means you will have to look for visual clues in order to find out what is going wrong. If you see small water stains on the wall or flooring, you will more than likely have a leak somewhere. Being able to troubleshoot your problems will save you loads of money in the long run.

It also helps you gain more knowledge on what could possibly go wrong in the future. If you have any questions about issues that you can’t fully troubleshoot, either look online or call up your local plumber and explain them to him. He will be able to tell you in detail what could be causing the problem, and more than likely, what it will take in order to get it fixed the right way.

glass shower doors frameless

A glass shower door can take a bathroom design that’s plain and ordinary and make it incredible. Functional, yet chic the glass doors of today offer a lot of more options than designs from the past, too.

It’s true that for some, the bathroom is simply a room to take care of business. It can be plain, basic and boring as long as it’s functional. Glass doors can work here, too. By going with one of simplistic designs, the care is easy, the functionality is present and there’s no shower curtain to wash and/or replace.

Others, however, see the bathroom as an escape. It’s a place to soak in a warm tub or take in a hot shower. It should be relaxing, eye appealing and a pleasure to retreat to. For these people, a bathroom design can be as important as the living or dining rooms. Aesthetically pleasing, clean and beautiful are musts.

Here’s where glass doors can make a real difference. Depending on bathroom size and design, shower doors can be simply functional, yet beautiful or they can make a statement in a room.

Large bathrooms, for example, often have a separate showering area along with a standalone tub. Showers can be enclosed entirely in a frameless glass structure that speaks to style with unusual lines and visually pleasing designs. Elaborate and beautiful, these structures add an architectural appeal to a bathroom. Whether going for basic glass or intricately designed glass, too, can make a real difference. The choices here are almost endless as good glassmakers can even create a motif in the pieces. If what’s wanted isn’t available in a standard door, a custom made one can fill the need.

Smaller bathrooms can still benefit from a glass door. The sliding types that tend to go into shower/tub combinations can still be beautiful. Think beyond the basic frosted or bumped glass sheeting to pieces of glass with designs or colors and the idea starts to become clearer. Here, too, custom pieces can be designed or special styles ordered.

Whether going basic and frosted or elaborate and frameless, the choice of glass for the bathroom is important, too. It should be rated for safety no matter the design chosen. Glass in the bath should break like a windshield on car in tons of little pieces rather than sharp shards.

Once glass has been chosen and installed, caring for it might take a special touch. Depending on the type and style you’ve chosen, the care may be slightly different. It’s a good idea to talk with the installer or follow manufacturer instructions for care. No matter the case though, caring for glass can be easy if regular maintenance is part of a routine.

Wipe down the glass after each use and be certain to remove any soap or conditioner residue that might be stuck on it. Don’t use harsh abrasives. Regular wiping will help cut down on water stains or mineral build up, which makes overall care that much easier.

A glass shower door can turn an ordinary bathroom into an extraordinary one. They can also lend a utilitarian sense to a regular bathroom, serving basic needs better than curtains.

faucet moen

You have made the decision that it is time for a new faucet for the kitchen however, you are not sure of what to do first. Do not feel lonely. Buying a faucet is not something people do very often. But just do not go out and grab the first one you see. This will take a little research to know what you are looking to buy. After you figure this out, you will be amazed at how easy it was to do. After you read the following tips the ability to make the right choice for buying a faucet will be a snap; the kind that will not soon be forgotten.

Question #1: Here is a very important question. Will you be replacing a Pegasus kitchen faucet or will there be a new one installed where there was none? Why is this so important? Because if there was already a faucet there it will have the necessary plumbing. If it had a faucet the new Pegasus faucet will require the same amount of holes. Counting these holes is an important step.

All in One Faucets

Does your sink have only one hole? Then, you’ll want to look for a one-piece (or single handle) faucet. One-piece faucets are those that integrate the handle and spout, and require just a single hole for the handle and spout piece (although they typically require a separate hole for an optional sprayer).

Faucet with Three Pieces

Do you have an older, traditional sink with three holes? If so, you probably have a two-handle faucet, having a separate hot and cold tap, and another another hole for the spout, and possibly even a fourth for the sprayer. Some kitchen sinks even have integrated sprayers and soap dispensers, which demonstrates the need to investigate the number of holes that much more obvious.

Question #2: How much space do you have? Before you purchase among the wide range of Pegasus kitchen faucets, you’ll want to measure the area in which the new faucet will be installed so that you’ll be sure it fits the space before you install it.

Question #3: What type of handles do you prefer? With typical kitchen faucets, you’ll have either a single handle that rotates one way or the other to change the temperature, or two handles where one handle controls the hot water while the other controls the cold water. One-piece faucets usually have either a handle that’s attached directly to the faucet or a handle that is positioned to the side where a sprayer would typically be. Selecting the one that’s right for you is completely a matter of personal choice.

Question #4: When choosing from all the Pegasus faucets available which one suits the way you want your kitchen to look and fits with your dcor? Since they are available in such as wide variety it sometimes makes this a difficult decision. Many opt for the simple faucet when choosing the one they are going to install. Often they will choose one that closely resembles the one that was taken out. These typical faucets are normally very basic and have chrome plating. The old faucet was one they were used to seeing everyday and they may not want to replace it with something fancy or too far off from the original. There are those who like trying new looks and may choose a quite fancy design or even a European type of faucet carried by Pegasus, Kohler and Moen which are quite elegant. The high end look that you may want to create are available from Pegasus who carries a nice variety of styles which includes brushed nickel and chrome. The Pegasus brand of faucet is a private label from Home Depot This will be easily found online as well as in the physical stores.

Question #5: What type of sprayer will you choose? The choices are: All in one or separate from the faucet. The difference comes down to which one you prefer as one is just as good as the other.

Question #6: Do you use your sink for washing oversized pots and pans? Many people who like to cook use oversized pans. The kitchen faucet with a longer neck will allow you to put these larger pots and pans in the sink for washing.

Question #7: Would you prefer to have a water filter?

This can be a preference of some people who would rather filter their own water than pay for bottled water. The built-in filter will allow you to get clean, healthy water whenever you want it. Even those faucets which do not come with a built-in filtering system can usually be fitted with one.

Question #8: Will you have your kitchen faucet professionally installed or will you do-it-yourself? The reason this question is important is because of the complexity differences between different models of sinks. With some faucets, the units mount from the sink top whereas others mount from the bottom. As you can imagine, the steps for installing both are quite different. Another factor to consider is that there are four main types of faucet mechanisms: 1) ball valve, 2) ceramic disk, 3) compression valve, and; 4) cartridge. The type of faucet you choose won’t make a big difference day-to-day, but some faucet mechanisms are easier to repair than others. If this is a DIY (do-it-yourself) project, be sure to do your homework and choose wisely.
